Te Tāhuhu o Te Rangi - call for proposals from local artists

Ōpōtiki District Council is undertaking a major building project – Te Tāhuhu o Te Rangi. This facility, located in the heart of the Ōpōtiki township, will deliver a community hub that ties together current library services with many other facilities for businesses, individuals and community groups, a digital hub, arts and cultural hub and research opportunities.

This exciting new building in the centre of the Ōpōtiki township marks the start of the town centre revitalisation project. The project also forms part of a bigger transformation of the Ōpōtiki District – we have new industry, new opportunities and stable and growing primary sectors. Ōpōtiki is booming and community facilities like Te Tāhuhu o Te Rangi are part of our future. The construction of the building is underway and we are now looking for artists to help bring the building to life.

Opportunity to contribute

There are eight panels in the Te Tāhuhu o Te Rangi building some of which are illustrated in the artist’s impression image.

We are looking to commission local artists or artists with a connection to our District to provide permanent art work for display on these panels.

Details for artists to consider:

8 panels available for display of both permanent and exhibition art.
Pieces can be 2/3 of a panel or 1/3 of a panel (or smaller as part of a combined composition).
The total budget available for all permanent art is $50,000.
Overall dimensions of each panel are 1.16m x 4.76m. Specific dimensions of each piece will be confirmed when proposals are agreed and artists appointed.
The top of each panel has an overlapping ‘wedge’ that will need to be considered for pieces in this location. Details can be provided upon request.
Weight is a consideration in terms of material choice.
The location and placement of art on each panel will be decided once proposals from artists have been received. A decision will be made on how much of the space is to be retained for exhibition art once we have received proposals from artists.
Artists interested in exhibiting their art in the building are encouraged to submit proposals for consideration. Artists whose proposals are not selected for permanent display, can request consideration for display as exhibition art.
