EAST CAPE
The East Cape is approximatley 2 and a half hours from Opotiki. Take a scenic drive along State Highway 35, part of the Pacific Coast Highway, and see some of the natural beauty the East Coast of New Zealand is known for. The historic East Cape Lighthouse is a popular attraction. The Lighthouse stands 154 metres above sea level on Otiki Hill, above East Cape. Fishing, hunting, swimming, sight seeing, the East Cape has it all.
KAWERAU
Kawerau, located in the heart of the Bay of Plenty is surrounded by bush, forest and farmland. Kawerau town itself is in a prime position, no more than 20 minutes from beach, lakes, rivers, mountains and forest attractions. OHOPE BEACH
Ohope Beach, voted NZs most loved beach, is only 6km from Whakatane and offers the walker, bather, surfer or fisherman 11 kms of uninterrupted, white, Pacific beach sand. It's north facing aspect gives you the full arc of plentiful sunshine. A section of the beach is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer month and there are a range of shops, food & drink outlets, playgrounds and much more to keep everyone busy.
WHAKATANE
Whakatane is one of the most diversely beautiful areas in New Zealand. Sandy beaches are predominant along the 54 kilometres of coastline that stretches from Otamarakau in the west to Ohiwa in the east. Central areas include fertile lowlands and farming areas on the Rangitaiki Plains through to Murupara. Te Urewera National Park in the south, which makes 41% of the district, is protected native forest and is home to a rich array of flora and fauna. The total area of the district covers 433,000ha or 4,442km2.
